NCSC launch “online service guidance” for small businesses

12/01/2024

The National Cyber Security Centre yesterday (11th Jan 2024) launched new guidance for small businesses to help them safely use online services such as cloud computing, web hosting, online accounting, and invoicing.

The new release is aimed at those small to mid-sized businesses who may be overwhelmed by some of the other guidance previously published which is more suited to larger organisations.

The guidance covers the following areas:

  • Using online services safely
  • Choosing a good service
  • Back up your organisation’s critical data
  • Protecting your public domain name
  • Creating separate users’ accounts
  • Securing your users’ accounts
  • Protecting your admin accounts
  • Defending your online accounts from malware
  • Using the security features built in to the service
  • Recovering a hacked account or service

The guidance forms part of a wider initiative by the NCSC to help smaller businesses stay safe in an ever increasingly dangerous online world.

This initiative includes a wealth of information and guidance on topics such as Phishing, Social Media, Malware, Securing devices, and much more.

The section also includes handy tools such as the Cyber Action Plan which is a short questionnaire that allows business owners the ability to think about the sort of issues that a small business faces and whether or not they need to take action to fix any potential issues.
